SunHorse Stables: Trainer Laura Jennings has competed in everything from rodeo to endurance to dressage, and has spent decades studying all aspects of horsemanship. She grew up rodeoing, working on ranches, and racing bareback through sagebrush meadows (while hoping that no rabbits jumped out and spooked her horse from under her — it was a long walk home on foot). She worked for a top reining trainer in college, worked as a guide for cattle drives and fast-paced backcountry adventures, trained for many many years under the guidance of professional dressage riders, and she now trains horses and teaches lessons full-time at her riding school in Las Vegas.

All of these experiences, good as well as bad, have shaped her horsemanship. Her focus is on riding and training to increase the comfort and longevity of our hardworking horses. She does this through assessing and adjusting everything that affects the horse, including stabling, nutrition, groundwork, saddle fit, biomechanics, rider position, and physical and mental health (human and equine). Laura shows riders of all levels how to interact with their horse in ways that build up the horse and rider’s fitness and comfort, to keep everyone sound and safe for long and successful partnerships.

For riders new to horses: Where do you start? Laura provides a holistic view of everything a horse person should be aware of, including feed, stabling, first aid, terminology, tacking up, rider position, and how to think like a horse. New riders have the opportunity to cover all the basics so that should they decide to pursue horse ownership, they have a good foundation of knowledge to support them.

For advanced riders: Frustrated, tired, not sure how to smooth out your relationship with your horse? Ever feel like you missed a day in horsemanship kindergarten? Western or English, Laura can help you work to discover and fill any gaps you might have in your horse keeping skills. On the flip side, everything is going great with your horse? Come try some new skills to keep things fresh, including many types of groundwork, dressage principles that can help any horse learn to move in healthy ways, new and old games to keep things fun, and fine-tuning rider position for strength and safety.
